Spinderella
|
Deidra Jones is a successful DJ, musician, producer, rapper, writer, and mother. Known to the entertainment world as Spinderella, she is without question one of the pioneers of hip-hop music and a prominent example of great achievement by female artists and entertainers in the music industry. Spin has accumulated her experiences in hip hop and radio in some of the entertainment industry’s biggest markets and is ready to take the broadcasting world by storm. Spin and co-host DJ Mo’Dav can be heard via the syndicated Superadio show The Back Spin, which airs in eight markets across the country. The Back Spin is comprised of old school hits and “classics for that ass” that highlight over 30 years of soul, R&B, and hip hop music.
Spinderella’s past radio experience includes a Friday night mix show syndicated on some of the nation’s top radio stations, including New York’s Hot 97 (WQHT) and WPGC in Washington, D.C. Spin also co-hosted the “Ladies’ Night” show with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez. Most recently, Spinderella held down the afternoon drive position alongside DJ A-One on Los Angeles radio station KKBT (100.3 The Beat).
Fans of hip hop and pop music know Spinderella as the talented & sexy DJ of the Grammy award winning female trio Salt ‘N’ Pepa. Hit songs such as “Push It”, “Shoop”, “Whatta Man”, and “Let’s Talk About Sex” became anthems for a new generation and catapulted the three members into success and stardom across the globe. Salt ‘N’ Pepa opened up the male-dominated doors of hip-hop and urban music to women and created an industry standard that every record company tried to replicate.
Spinderella’s journey to stardom started in Brooklyn, New York where she was born and raised. “It wasn’t the best neighborhood, but never once did I feel like I was destined to stay there. I had big dreams and I was motivated by my love for music and performing.” Spin would always dance, make up routines, and sing along to music that blared from her 7th floor window. Her parents eventually enrolled her in a local performing arts workshop where she had the opportunity to learn theatrical techniques and develop her performance skills.
Being a part of a world-renowned group gave Spin the chance to use her vocal skills both on and off of the stage. Once described as “very shy”, she admits those days are very much in the past. “I find now that I have a lot to say, and the media takes advantage of that. At one point I wouldn't open my mouth – now they can't shut me up!” Spin doesn't have a big mouth, but her feistiness and humorous side have made her a delightful TV personality. She has appeared on “Late Night With David Letterman” & “The Tonight Show”, Nickelodeon’s hit kid show “All That”, comedy shows “Mad TV” and “Saturday Night Live”, and also had the opportunity to host her own show on MTV, “Lip Service”.
Spin has also appeared several times on The Ellen De Generes Show as a guest DJ.
It was Spinderella’s association with Salt ‘N’ Pepa that has won her the most acclaim and success in her career. Spin was a co-writer on the hit single “None Of Your Business”, which expanded her role in the group outside of the DJ realm and gave her insight on pursuing more than one talent. Although the group reunited briefly in 2005 and 2006 for the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, the question of an official reunion and subsequent album is still up in the air. “Our solo projects are keeping each of us busy right now”, says Spin. “We're all focusing on our personal quests for our careers and enjoying the opportunities we're being given.”
Being busy is something that Spinderella has always appreciated. “My life has never been like a nine-to-five job because there’s always something happening. It gets hectic, but I don't mind because I love performing.” Acting is another goal that Spin has in sight. “I took a class to see if I would like it, and I actually loved it,” she enthuses. “I really like the idea of getting paid to be someone else for a few hours every day. It opens you up as a person.”
Spinderella is still very active on the party circuit. She rocks crowds across the United States every month and has traveled to Australia, Denmark and Canada within the last year to DJ in front of thousands of her fans. She’s done high profile events for TiVo, Magic Johnson Enterprises, Children Uniting Nations, Glamour Magazine, Mecca Clothing, Cher, the J. Paul Getty Museum, The Motion Picture Academy, Planned Parenthood, Nike, Red Bull, Maxim Magazine, LA Weekly, Skyy Vodka, Enyce, House Of Courvoisier, Paramount Pictures, Queen Latifah, Carl Lewis, Rodney Jerkins, and many others.
“There isn’t anything I can't do especially when I put my mind to it and feel it in my heart.” You would think that just being Spinderella is enough for one woman to handle, but this woman wants it all. I'm blessed,” she explains. “A day doesn't go by that I don't appreciate all I have or where I've come from.”

DJ EQUE
|
My Bio
You're too pretty to be a "DJ" said the infamous Luther Campbell a.k.a Uncle Luke upon meeting the world renowned DJ Eque at a video shoot. But after hearing her play just one time, he instantly signed her up as his official tour DJ! Eque is still trying to figure out exactly what looks and DJ skills have in common but it isn't rare for the hazel eyed beauty to get this type of response. Often times when she shows up at a club to spin, she is quickly mistaken for a dancer, waitress, party girl, anything but the one who will work the turntables and keep the dance floor jumpin all nite long! It has been her focused skills not her looks that have kept this DJ in the game for nearly 10 years rocking parties, concert tours and television appearances in some of the hottest spots around the world including Italy, Switzerland, Canada, and Germany!
DJ Eque has also e! lectrified the stages as tour DJ for national and international tours of Beyonce, Usher, Faith Evans, B2K, Erick Sermon, Keith Murray and Redman. The Texas bred DJ began her adventure with music while attending Texas Southern University on a basketball scholarship. At Eque's request, a friend taught her the basics of DJ ing and she got so into it that she would show up at his house everyday to practice. She eventually bought her own equipment and started her now very extensive record collection. From there she honed her skills and began doing local radio and parties with the late DJ Screw, a legend of the Houston hip hop scene. When the opportunity came to join a new female rap group presented it self, DJ Eque loaded up her records into her brother's car and headed west to the City of Angels. While in LA, DJ Eque linked up with two other ladies who shared her passion for music, the Poetess a LA based MC and poet and Dr. Dre protege, The Lady of Rage to form the G Spot, a top rated radio show on 100.3 The Beat.
She continued at The Beat as DJ for Cypress Hill's "Soul Assassin Show". Eque soon became a staple in the LA hip hop scene and began expanding her notoriety with appearances in music videos, national commercials and TV shows such as Martin, David Letterman, Carson Daly Show, as well as co-hosting segments of BET's Rap City and NBC's Weekend Vibe. It is DJ Eque who sparks up the party scene in 50 Cent's break out video, Wanksta. "These days there are so many "model DJ's" girls with a pretty face who buy two turntables and a few hits and want to call themselves a DJ. I take this music so serious.
Records and parties have become an art form to me. I study the crowd's reaction to certain sounds and constantly think about new ways to mix songs, rhythms and beats" says the turntable darling who is featured in an upcoming film MistressX, a documentary exploring the world of female DJ's. DJ Eque's skills have not gone unnoticed garnering her a long client list including major corporations and industry heavyweights such as GQ, Nike, Virgin Records, P. Diddy, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, Macy Gray, Shaquille O'Neal, Mariah Carey and Eve. DJ Eque's last venture on TV was DJ and co-host of BET's Comic View. She also dee jayed on tour this summer on the Sugarwater Tour with Floetry, Jill Scott, Erkah Badu and Queen Latifah. DJ Eque is currently performing with Missy Elliot with shows in South Africa, Monte Carlo and New York. She also is currently perfecting her music production talents and can be found behind the turntables at the hottest parties in the land.

DJ Moon Baby
|
Some may coin Angela Jollivette, AKA DJ Moonbaby, as just another female DJ, but she is far from it. As several people enjoy the art of music, she takes it to another level and lives the art of music. The name “Moonbaby” came about in a theoretical way, as her moods tend to set the tone of musical selections during her sets and since the moon is said to dictate one’s moods, hence the name Moonbaby was born.
Her passion for sound and musical elements took root at an early age. As music became her escape and foremost outlet for expression, Moonbaby’s childhood years took place during the fusion of R&B Soul and a new genre of music called Hip Hop. These sounds combined helped her understand the creativity and expression that comes to pass when an artist and music unite unleashing magic. Setting her sights on being part of a budding musical explosion, KJLH a classic R&B/Soul station, along with KDAY, a popular 1980’s Los Angeles-based Hip Hop radio station was instrumental in her development as a DJ. Recognized as a station that dedicated itself to breaking new artists, the station was able to captivate her attention during their nightly mix show in which enhanced her ability.
Moonbaby has been involved in many projects, but most recently she was the driving force behind successfully branding The Moonbar, a private secluded 10,000sq ft loft space, located in Downtown Los Angeles established to host exclusive events for major corporate and entertainment companies. Many events have been hosted at her trendy self-titled location such as a Rita Marley book signing for “No Woman, No Cry”, the 2004 Jill Scott Album Listening Party, and an exclusive private birthday party for Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest, to name a few. After a phenomenal two years in the Downtown Los Angeles location, she has decided to continue to brand and expand The Moonbar at various venues throughout the city. In addition to The Moonbar, her client base includes The Grammy Association, The National Basketball Association, Lady Enyce Clothing, Pan African Film Festival, Hidden Beach Records, Soul Folks Café, Rootz Media, CBS/Ascent Media Group, Independent Film Project, Robbi Reed Casting, and The Duvernay Agency.
As a result of her many talents, Moonbaby has become a hot commodity for both her skills as well as her style. Her goal? To be successful with a cutting edge business sense as well as a creative mind, as she puts music’s light and energy into everything she does…from Old to New School, Hip Hop to Jazz, or Fusion to Funk, she constantly takes music to a higher level. She is an artist that is ever evolving and ever growing. And whether she’s sealing a deal, managing talent or simply spinning the hottest tracks that make you want to move, DJ Moonbaby’s finger is ALWAYS on the pulse of sounds that nourish and inspire the soul….
